Frames for 3D

Frames for 3D is really a suite of tools that allow creators to control multiple 3D objects at once within a specific volume. 3D objects placed inside a Frame can have rules applied to them like being constrained to specific edges or be clipped by the Frame bounds. Frames also lets creators quickly and accurately align and distribute 3D objects that are placed inside it.

Role

Lead Designer for end to end experience.

Design Goals

  • Help creators accurately control, place and modify 3D objects within a specific volume.
  • Let creators understand the results of an operation before they commit.
  • Make simple but tedious 3D tasks quicker for creators.
  • Add confidence and predictability to 3D layout.
Constraints on 3D objects inside a Frame make this 3D room adapt intelligently to size changes.

Challenges

  • Align & distribution of objects within a Frame - Making sure creators have good signifiers that show the result of operations before they commit to a decision.
  • Frame clipping - Handling nested Frames that have different cap settings than a parent Frame.
  • Communication - Frames in 3D is new concept so helping creators understand what Frames is and (maybe more importantly) what it isn’t was critical to ensure customer expectations are met.
